6 Simple Steps To Success In Life

steps to success in lifeSuccess means different things to different people. For some it is having A-list blog, for others it is marrying a millionaire or writing a bestseller.

Defining what success is for you is important. You will most probably need Q&A session with yourself for that.

When it gets crystal clear you know what your goals are and where you want to be. That’s very good.

But what happens next?

How many times have you decided to become someone, to change something, to achieve, to create, to do …?

And how many times you actually changed, achieved, created, etc… ?

And why is that?

Most probably because we did not do what it takes to succeed? Most probably it’s because we never gave our decision a chance to come to live.

When I looked back at my modest list of personal achievements I found out that the way to those achievements took the same 6 small steps.

Let me share them with you and maybe reaching success will not seem unrealistic dream anymore.

1.    Start

Someday… soon… in the future… in x days or weeks or months… later… these are the usual phrases we all hide behind.

Procrastination and laziness keep us from making the first steps and we put things for ”later”.

”Later” is a very dangerous term because it has tendency of transforming into ‘‘never’’.

As a result we all have goals we never reach because we never get to the point to start.

Remember – journey starts with the first step.

So take that first step, start now.

You may as well announce about it to make sure that you feel accountable.

2.    Focus

“If there are 9 rabbits on the ground, if you want to catch one, just focus on one.”
Jack Ma

There are many people fighting for your attention. There are many distractions getting on your way.

Your goal may need some sacrifices and prioritizing. You will need to give up some things or at least postpone them for later.

Focus on the most important at the moment – i.e. reaching your goal. Allocate time and effort on things, which will get you closer to the desired result.

And proceed one goal at a time, otherwise you risk having mediocre results at the end.

3.    Believe

You have to believe that you will succeed all along. You need to have the true faith that your success is a matter of time.

Collect all your doubts, wrap them up and put them aside. Diminish their role and don’t let them influence your decisions and actions.

Reduce the time you spend with people who discourage you to the possible minimum.

Communicate with those, who encourage, support and believe in your success as much (or even more) as you do.

Read inspirational blog posts, books and true success stories. If others can – you can too.

As Robin Sharma points out – Your ”I Can” is more important than your IQ.

4.    Keep going

Things will not work out immediately but don’t get discouraged and give up too soon. The most important one of the steps to success is to keep going forward.

Getting even millimeter closer to your goal today from where you were yesterday is already an achievement.

5.    Celebrate small victories

Most probably you will not reach your goal overnight, but you will reach different small milestones in-between.

Celebrate those small victories, because they are the counter arguments to your doubts and insecurities.

With each small victory you get closer to your big goal and each small victory is equally important in getting where you want to be.

You deserve a treat and a small break after each one of them.

After all, success in life is not to be celebrated on your deathbed or read out on a eulogy, is it?. It is all about the journey.

6.    Look back and say thank you

Great! You are finally there! You got where you wanted to be.

Now what?

Now look back and you will see that there were many people who helped you out along the way. Get back to all of them and thank for their help, support, advice and encouragement!

It will not take huge amount of time or effort, but it will mean a hell lot to them.

These are 6 simple steps to success in life. Each one is simple on its own. Yet surprisingly, taking these simple steps will definitely get you there.

That’s all for now. Wish you success, whatever it may mean to you.

Please feel free to share your recipe for success with us.

Ani, these are great steps! I especially like the one about focus since I’ve really been working on that recently. I found that I was getting very distracted by thinking about all of the things that needed to be done and wasn’t getting ANY of them done because of it! So I reminded myself to just do the thing in front of me and forget the rest. It works!

  2. Thanks, Ani, for the great list. For me, “Keep Going” is the one that stands out. I need to remind myself to keep going daily, that things are truly moving forward! (Even when it seems they are not!)

  3. Absolutely true. Though I would add one more to it. FINISH :-)) Lots of people are good at starting things, but finishing takes persistence to whole another level.

  4. Great list. Simple yet effective.

Decide on your goal and begin to take action immediately! Embrace the small victories and know enjoy the journey because you are making progress.

  5. Discouragement is always lurking in the background but when I think of NOT pursuing my dreams….it is not an option. I always tell people that most people have an idea, goal or dream but fail to follow through – exactly what your post said. My challenge is distractiability so I really needed your point to focus. Thanks.

I like this list, Ani. Focus is really important for me right now – I just left a comment on Dolly’s blog saying how I’m so torn in different directions when it comes to writing. Should I work on my fiction book? The e-book? Blog posts? As you said, if you try to focus on all of them, it doesn’t work. Thanks for the reminder to focus on one thing at a time. =)

Kaylee and Sarah, I have the same problem. Focus is difficult one. There are many things I want to do at the same time – blog posts, novel, book marketing, reading… Often I end up doing none of them at the end or can not dedicate enough time and effor to each of them and as a results things are not as good as they could be.

  7. “If there are 9 rabbits in the ground and you want to catch one, focus on just one”
That’s a keeper for me! Thanks Ani for breaking this down so simply.
    Focus, focus, focus!

The steps are simple, but putting them into action… oh so hard! I’d say about 90%+ of the changes I intend to make/things I intend to accomplish… go undone :)

    Great post Ani.

Having a firm definition of success, the way we see it, our goal is set and our passion reinforced in the sense of gaining an additional direction. While success may for some be the sum of achievements both in terms of professional career or academical recognition, for others it may represent adding value to the community and seeing things through the prism of contribution to others, It may also represent having, and also enjoying, a lifestyle tailored by our needs, our expectations.

Once we are set, your list perfectly applies, albeit every individual will tweak things down the road. That’s what makes the whole ride fun and interesting :)

I would, if that’s OK, point to an article that I wrote not that long ago, dissecting the idea and the definition of success the way I understand it. I believe it will be a nice read for the ones enjoying this post :)

    Have a great day,

When I try to make a decision on what to focus on I select one project then I observe my stomach, it it feels fuzzy then I know it’s probably not the right one to start on. A great help would be your Q&A to unroot your priorities and passions.

Another variation of your quote “He who chases 2 rabbits catches none”

  11. 6 seriously great tips, I want to say which of the 6 I think are the most important but I can’t, all 6 are vital. I personally believe that you should celebrate every little victory even if it is just in your mind or with a smile, and looking back and saying thanking is important. Gratitude is something overlooked these days. Those two are things which I believe people are not taught enough about.

Ani, great post! I was just getting ready to write a post on my site that emphasized taking that first step. I have so many successes in my life that started with “diving head first” into it and figuring out the details as I go. Our only failures are the adventures we never start!

Hopefully you won’t mind, but I would like to link to this post when I write my new one.

Love this! Believe and Keep Going are essential. My sister and I were just talking about a positive attitude to edge out all of the negative ones we come across. You are certainly not letting anything stand in your way and I applaud you for that!!

Great list of steps. I think persistence is probably the most important one. Pushing past that moment you want to give up is necessary. Whenever I push on even though I want to through in the towel, I always seem to achieve what I want. Always seems like things are at their hardest before you succeed sometimes.

I’d like to add that showing up helps, even though that goes along with your step about starting. I was at a movie shoot the other day waiting to be an extra and some girl got into the movie by just showing up and asking to be an extra. Showing up and asking for what you want can really help you get things.

I like this! nice post Ani. :)

I always work hard no matter what thing I have to do…but in the end..I never receive top position. ..I am always in middle.. that’s so discouraging and then every time I leave that particular work completely to do in future. And I feel bad somewhere inside me
