6 Activities for Self-improvement and Personal Growth

It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.” – Leonardo da Vinci.

personal development activitiesThere are people who constantly grow, develop and learn new things. People who are sure that knowledge, skills and new experiences enrich their lives and make them better. People, who have goals and do things in order to reach them.

There are also others…

Those who are stuck at the same level. Those who work at the same place for ages because they are ”loyal” to the company. Those who did not read or learn anything new after their graduation because they ”did not have time” and were ”too busy”. Most of them do not change anything because they don’t want to leave their comfort zone. They just don’t understand that life begins at the end of their comfort zone.

Since you are reading this post I am absolutely sure that you are from the first group, because otherwise you would most probably read Cosmo or Maxim instead.

So you are as addicted to knowledge as I am?

Then most probably you too enjoy the below personal development activities, which contribute to growth.

1.    Read

Some believe that any kind of read is very useful and from absolutely any book there is a lot to learn. Maybe that’s how it was before, when there was no self-publishing and what we read assured minimum level of quality.

Now I would encourage you to read selectively. If done so, fiction and non-fiction as well as good blogs will assist you in your journey to personal growth.

2.    Take an online course

Fortunately now there are no limitations and you can get any resources in subjects you are interested in. There are plenty free resources as well, so lack of money is no longer a barrier. It does not matter in which part of the world you live either, since with Internet we all seem to be everywhere.

If you are unsure whether you should enroll in an online program or take a few courses, make sure that you request more information from some university websites. The school will then respond with more than enough information with which to make your decision, so you can be completely informed before signing up.

Remember that no barrier should get between you and your dreams, including your current location and financial situation. There are always solutions to your problems, particularly in today’s society with online degrees being so widely available to people all over the world.

3.    Do brain workouts

Brain is a muscle, which needs stretching from time to time. Intellectual games (Sudoku, crosswords, etc.) and puzzles ensure the workout your brain needs.

Play Sudoku and word games, solve riddles and put together a puzzle once in a while. Your brain will appreciate that.

4.    Travel

There are so many amazing places to see, so many interesting people to meet and so many new experiences to have.

Visiting different countries will help you realize how colorful, diverse and interesting the world really is. Each trip will bring new friends, new emotions, knowledge and memories.

More you see broader you will think more open-minded you will become and easier you will overcome cultural differences.

No matter where you go and how much you stay your trips will add value to the way you see things.

5.    Create

Everyone is creative. We all were born with equal amount of creativity. Look at children and you will see!

Later life happens and the creativity in most of us falls asleep. And we end up thinking ”wow, I wish I could write too… I wish I could paint too… I wish … I wish…”.

You know what? Stop wishing and start acting.

You do not need a falling star for that. All you need is desire.

Go ahead. Doodle something, write few lines, sing along, take photos… anything…

Simply call back the sleeping creativity and wake it up. Give it a chance and you’ll see what happens.

6.    Spend time alone

I have written about the benefits of spending some time alone in post called 8 Simple Ways to Enjoy Loneliness. It is my most popular post so far btw.

Spend some time alone to go back to your life events and evaluate your values, actions and thoughts. Or try to find out new things by asking yourself these 50 questions.

This was the list of things that help me move forward, self-improve and grow.

What about you? Feel free to share your thoughts and suggestions in comments.

Wish you continuous personal growth and self-improvement!

  1. A great list and good reminders! Thanks! Like you, I’m a lifelong learner. Wouldn’t have it any other way!

  2. Bobbi Emel says:

Good list, Ani! I especially like to read and I relax by doing crossword puzzles. They keep my brain engaged in somewhat of a meditative state.

  3. Angie says:

Great list. I love the fact that you have included actions like travel and create – most self-development focuses on reading, learning, and taking action (and most people just do the first one on that list and wonder why they aren’t getting anywhere!)

We can learn so much about ourselves and others by travelling, especially to different countries – visiting poorer countries is guaranteed to make you realise how very privileged we are in the Western world. And just seeing how everything is done in other countries opens your eyes to the possibilities that are all around us in the world.

Taking time to be creative is also vitally important – more now than ever. We live in a reactive world, being constantly stimulated by our ‘always-on’ culture: taking time to switch off and focus on what is inside our heads rather than what’s going on outside is something we all should do more often :-)

    • Ani says:

      Thanx Angie,

I am sure that reading, learning and taking action are very important but unfortunately not enough.
As to traveling from Western world to poorer countries – believe me it works both ways :) At least it did for me, thatss for sure!

  4. Carmelo says:

    Hi Ani,

It’s just amazing how many ways there are to learn if we’re only attuned to them. Like your “loneliness” post. And think about what a simple walk can do. What can we learn from them whether in Nature, in the city, or wherever?

I think what we’re doing with all these things you mentioned (and many more) is we’re creating openings to our inner selves who know so much more than we imagine. Are we learning? Or are we connecting with our knowledge. It’s kind of like the “Know Thyself” maxim, isn’t it?

Like you say … when learning leads to action – now that’s learning! :-)

Anyway, glad to have found you and love your way of connecting with us.

  5. Amit Amin says:

I think I would grow more if I eliminated #1 from the list – I read too much! Or, I guess I just need to start being more selective in my reading… hm….

  6. I used to joke to people who graduated from high school or a level of higher education that “you never need to learn again!” Oh, now terrible a joke that turns out to be. Of course, that also came from a guy who used to be proud that I didn’t read books.
I think travel is really a magic key for the vast majority of people. The barriers are large though when vacation time, cost, family/pet logistics, or other variables come into play.
It’s no excuse not to want to travel though or to actually try to pull it off. Little has opened my eyes more to my possibilities and the possibilities of the world than seeing how other people life their lives…and what’s important to them.

    • Ani says:

Yes Joel travel requires different things before it is realized. Lately I have been thinking that maybe leading minimalistic life may free some finances to invest in travel…

  7. You are speaking my language Sista! Great post and great reminders for all of us to stretch our mental muscles. I would add to the list to meet new people from different cultures, races, religions, etc. I think this helps to keep us open minded and young. Some stay within their similar thinking circles and close themselves off to new experiences, new ideas and activities. Thanks.

  8. Kaylee says:

Great list – I used to do Sudoku often, this made me wanna pick it up again. I’m also going to do a version of #2 and take a class – a ballet class! I’ve been wanting to since I had to quit dance when I was little…So this should definitely be a great experience. =)

  9. Steve says:

This is a great list. I try to do a little of everything on here, but I especially love #1. I’m an avid reader so that’s the one that jumped out to me right away.

I think you could add meditation to this list. I find it relaxing and often will lead me to new thoughts and openness to other people. Really I think it’s just a great thing to do especially if you’re stressed out.

    • Ani says:

      Hi Steve.
Most probably you are right about the meditation. The thing is that since I never tried it myself I could not give first hand recommendation on that one :)

Re the free education, readers should check out the hundreds (or probably thousands by now) of MOOCs that are out there (Massive Open Online Courses). Some of the most prestigious universities in the world offer MOOCs on every subject under the sun. In the past 18 months I have completed 18 MOOCs and know I have greatly improved myself as a result.

I would love to make contact with anyone wanting to improve themselves, as my mission in life is to help people do exactly that. A good start would be to go to my website, http://www.beallican.com, and ask for my 4 free e-books on personal development and success. :)
